京都から車で約3時間。高速道路を走り抜け、岐阜県中津川市へ。街の喧騒が少しずつ遠のいて、窓の外の景色が山と緑へと変わっていく頃、空気がふっと変わる。目指すのは「竜神の滝」。名前からしてなんだか神秘的な響きだが、実際に訪れてみると、その名に恥じない、清らかで迫力ある風景が広がっていた。

A Journey to the Water Deity

About a three-hour drive from Kyoto, speeding along the expressway brings you to Nakatsugawa City in Gifu Prefecture. As the noise of the city fades and the view outside the window gradually shifts to mountains and greenery, the air itself seems to change. The destination is Ryujin Waterfall. Even the name carries a mysterious allure—and once you arrive, the scenery lives up to it completely: pure, powerful, and breathtakingly beautiful.

中津川市の中でも、特に自然と歴史が色濃く残る中津地区。古代には東山道が通り、中世には織田・武田が勢力を争った山城が築かれた場所。近世には中山道の宿場町として栄え、旅人や商人の往来があったという。そんな土地の奥深い背景を知ってから訪れると、滝の流れにすら、歴史の気配を感じる気がする。

滝の入り口は、ちょっとした森の中。駐車場から徒歩で10分ほど、整備された遊歩道を進むと、やがて水の音が近づいてくる。そしてその先に姿を現すのが、「竜神の滝」。高さ約10メートルと決して大きな滝ではないけれど、その存在感は別格。周囲の岩肌を濡らしながら、絹のような白い流れが音を立てて落ちてくる様子は、まさに“水の神”のよう。滝壺は透き通った青緑色で、まるで龍が潜んでいそうな静けさと深さがある。

そしてなにより驚くのは、その“写真映え”っぷり。どこから撮っても絵になる構図。誰がシャッターを切っても綺麗に撮れるほど、自然そのものが完成された美しさを持っている。光の入り方、水の反射、岩の陰影。すべてが一枚の風景画のようで、季節によってもその表情はがらりと変わる。春は若葉と水のコントラストが爽やかで、夏は木陰と水音が心地いい。秋には紅葉が滝を彩り、冬は凍った水面が静けさを増す。いつ訪れても「来てよかった」と心から思える場所だ。

A Picture-Perfect Spot from Every Angle

Among the many scenic areas of Nakatsugawa City, the Nakatsu district stands out for its deep connection to both nature and history. In ancient times, the Tōsandō highway passed through here. During the medieval era, mountain castles like Ashowajō and Tokunojō were built as the Oda and Takeda clans fought for control. In the Edo period, Nakatsugawa prospered as a post town along the Nakasendō, welcoming travelers and merchants alike. Knowing this rich background, you can almost feel echoes of the past even in the flow of the waterfall.

The entrance to the falls lies just beyond a small forest. From the parking lot, it’s a short 10-minute walk along a well-maintained trail. Soon, the sound of rushing water grows louder—and then, suddenly, Ryujin Waterfall reveals itself. Though only about 10 meters tall, it has a striking presence. The silky white stream tumbles down the rocks with grace and strength, soaking the stone around it. The basin below glows a clear blue-green, as if a dragon might be quietly resting beneath its still surface.

What’s most astonishing is how photogenic it all is. Every angle offers a perfect shot. The scene is so naturally balanced that even an amateur with a smartphone can capture something breathtaking. The interplay of light, water, and stone creates a composition like a painting, changing with the seasons. In spring, the fresh green leaves pop against the water. Summer brings soothing shade and cool breezes. In autumn, fiery foliage frames the falls. And in winter, a frozen stillness blankets the scene. No matter when you visit, you’ll walk away thinking: “I’m so glad I came.”

自分をリトリートして

もちろん、滝だけ見て帰るのもいい。でも、少しだけ足を延ばして、周辺の小道を歩いてみるのもおすすめ。苔むした岩や、野鳥の声、ふと見上げると空が高く、日常の時間とは少し違うテンポが流れている。何も考えず、ただ歩く。それだけで、頭と心の中がすっと整理されていくような感覚がある。

そして中津川のまちは、自然だけではない。歴史ある町並みや、昔ながらの風情が残る宿場町、中津川宿を歩くのも楽しい。栗きんとんで有名な老舗和菓子店や、木工や陶芸などの地元工芸品の店など、立ち寄りたくなる場所が点在している。旅の途中でふらっと寄ったつもりが、気づけばゆっくりと過ごしてしまう。そんな力を持ったまちでもある。

日帰りでも楽しめる距離だけれど、もし時間に余裕があるなら、近くの温泉や宿で一泊してもいい。山あいの空気は夜になるとぐっと冷えて、星空が驚くほど美しく見える。朝には鳥の声とともに目が覚めて、また自然の中へと足が向かう。

自然の清らかさと、人の歴史と、そして今ここにいる自分とを、そっとつないでくれる場所だった。

A Retreat for the Soul

Of course, it’s perfectly fine to simply visit the waterfall and head home. But if you have a bit more time, take a short walk along the nearby forest paths. Moss-covered rocks, the call of wild birds, and a sky that seems just a little higher than usual—it all flows at a pace slightly different from everyday life. You don’t need to think about anything. Just walk. And somehow, your mind and heart begin to feel a little lighter, a little clearer.

But Nakatsugawa is more than just nature. A stroll through the historic post town of Nakatsugawa-juku reveals streets filled with traditional charm. You’ll find long-established wagashi shops famous for their kuri kinton sweets, as well as local studios offering hand-crafted woodwork and pottery. It’s the kind of town where you might plan to just stop by—only to find yourself lingering, without realizing it.

Though it’s close enough for a day trip, staying the night at a nearby inn or hot spring makes for a richer experience. As evening falls, the mountain air grows crisp, and the stars above shine brighter than you’d expect. In the morning, you’ll wake to the sound of birdsong, ready to set out again into nature.

It’s a place where the purity of nature, the depth of history, and your own presence in this moment quietly come together.
