幻想的な空間が山里にひっそりと

のんびりと続く山道を走り抜けると、里山の風景が少しずつ色を変えてゆく。到着したのは、京都府綾部市。美しい自然に包まれたこのまちには、どこか懐かしい田園風景と、古くから受け継がれてきた歴史と文化が、日常の中にしっかりと根を張っている。市街地を抜け、山に分け入ると、車道もどんどん細くなり、やがて舗装もまばらになっていく。そう、この場所は、ふらっと立ち寄るような気軽な場所ではない。けれど、「それでも行きたい」と思わせる理由が、ここにはある。

目指すのは、山あいにひっそりと佇む、ミツマタとシャガの群生地。今回訪れたのは4月末。最盛期は3月から4月中旬と聞いていたから、満開の姿はもう見られないかもしれない。でも、いいんだ。少しだけ遅れて咲いていたミツマタの黄色や、林床にそっと咲くシャガの淡い青紫色は、静かな空間の中に点々と輝くように咲いていて、ひとつひとつがまるで呼吸をしているようだった。

A Dreamlike Landscape Tucked Away in the Mountain Village

As you drive along the gently winding mountain road, the scenery gradually shifts, revealing the quiet beauty of rural Japan. The destination is Ayabe, a town in Kyoto Prefecture embraced by nature. Here, nostalgic rice fields stretch across the land, and centuries of history and culture are still deeply rooted in everyday life. Once you pass through the city center and head deeper into the mountains, the road narrows and the pavement becomes patchy. This is not a place you stumble upon by chance—it’s a destination you seek out with intention. And yet, that’s exactly what makes it so special.

Hidden in a quiet mountain valley lies a field of blooming Mitsumata and Shaga flowers. I visited in late April, just after the peak season, which usually spans from March to mid-April. I knew I might have missed the full bloom, but it didn’t matter. The soft yellow of the lingering Mitsumata and the pale bluish-violet Shaga blossoms scattered across the forest floor still created a breathtaking sight—delicate and luminous, as if each flower was quietly breathing in its own rhythm, within a serene and enchanted space.

黄金色の風景

斜面に広がるミツマタは、春の光を受けて、柔らかな黄金色に染まっていた。ミツマタは和紙の原料にもなる植物で、枝が必ず三つに分かれるのが名前の由来なのだとか。群生する様子はまるで、森の奥にぽっと灯りがともったような美しさがある。一方、木漏れ日の中で咲くシャガは、ひっそりとしていながらも気高く、その儚さがより一層、見る人の心をつかむ。ピークを過ぎた今でもなお感動できるのだから、最盛期の景色はいったいどれほど美しいのだろうと、想像するだけでまた訪れたくなってしまう。

山道は整備されているとはいえ、斜面が多く、足元は決してよくない。歩きやすい靴と、ほんの少しの覚悟が必要だ。でもその分、花々と出会ったときの気持ちは特別なものになる。誰に見せるでもない、誰かのためでもない。ただ、自分の中の「静けさ」を取り戻すような時間。

A Golden-Hued Landscape

The hillsides were softly bathed in gold, as the Mitsumata blossoms caught the gentle light of spring. This unique plant, once used in the making of traditional Japanese washi paper, is named for the way its branches always split into three. When they bloom in clusters, it’s as if small lanterns have been quietly lit deep in the forest—subtle, glowing, and utterly enchanting.
Meanwhile, the Shaga flowers bloom quietly in the dappled sunlight. Modest yet dignified, their pale, fleeting beauty holds a kind of grace that lingers in the heart. If the scenery could still be this moving after its peak, one can only imagine how breathtaking it must be in full bloom.

Though the mountain path is somewhat maintained, the slopes are steep and the footing can be rough. A good pair of walking shoes—and just a little resolve—are essential. But perhaps that’s what makes the moment you finally encounter these flowers feel so personal, so profound. It’s not about showing anyone. It’s not for anyone else. It’s simply a time to reconnect with the quiet that lives within you.

来年は最盛期に

綾部市は、この群生地だけでなく、ふもとのまち並みにも見どころが多い。歴史ある建物や寺社、丁寧に営まれる地元の暮らし。自然と文化が寄り添っているような町の空気は、京都市内とはまた違った奥ゆかしさがある。春だけでなく、夏の深緑や秋の紅葉もきっと美しいに違いない。

ミツマタとシャガの咲く場所に行くには、狙って行くしかない。道中は決して楽ではないけれど、それでも足を運ぶ価値は間違いなくある。そう、心がちょっとだけ乾いているときほど、花の静けさは沁みてくる。あの景色がまた見たくなったら、そのときもきっと、ちゃんと準備をして、会いに行くのだろう。

Ayabe offers more than just these flower-filled hillsides. At the foot of the mountains, the town itself is full of charm—historic buildings, old temples and shrines, and the quietly dignified rhythms of local life. There’s a graceful harmony between nature and tradition here, different from the atmosphere of Kyoto City. And not just in spring—surely the lush greens of summer and the vibrant foliage of autumn must be just as captivating.

To see the blooming Mitsumata and Shaga, you have to plan your visit. The journey isn’t easy, and it’s not a place you stumble upon by chance—but that’s exactly why it feels so rewarding once you arrive.
Yes, it’s when your heart feels a little dry that the quiet presence of flowers seems to reach you the most. And when I find myself longing to see that landscape again, I know I’ll come back—this time, with intention, and just in time for their full bloom.
